Climate Week 2014

It may not be as well known as Shark Week, but Climate Week, which is happening in New York City this week, is a lot more important. The central event is a Climate Summit by U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. The hope is that world leaders from government, finance and business will bring bold, new ideas for how to bring the world to a major new agreement to deal with climate change at next year’s big climate meeting in Paris.

That’s just the centerpiece; surrounding it are more than 100 seminars, talks, art exhibitions, forums and other events designed to raise the public’s consciousness about climate science, impacts and solutions.

For this week’s Climate Matters, we're stepping back from our usual analysis of weather and climate trends for an overall, big-picture look at how we really know that climate change is happening, and that our own emissions of greenhouse gases are a big part of the reason. We’ve also created our first-ever interactive quiz. You can test your knowledge about climate facts, share it online and see how you stack up against other people.
