Webinar: Taking Action on Extreme Heat: Preparing for Impacts and Understanding the Climate Connection
May 28, 2024
About this webinar:
Heat waves are one of the deadliest extreme weather events. And they’re on the rise — getting more intense and longer — because of human-caused climate change.
In the lead up to Heat Action Day 2024, we held this discussion with climate scientists and heat experts on the impacts of extreme heat, the risks associated with underreported heat-related impacts, and how heat action plans have been implemented around the world to significantly save lives.
The webinar also covered the results from a new report from Climate Central, World Weather Attribution, and the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre (which was released on the same day) which looks at heat waves around the world between May 2023 - May 2024, and how much more intense they were made because of climate change.
Speakers:
Moderated by Bernadette Woods Placky, Chief Meteorologist and Climate Matters Director at Climate Central, and featured:
Dr. Friederike Otto, Co-Lead of World Weather Attribution and Senior Lecturer in Climate Science at the Grantham Institute for Climate Change and the Environment
Dr. Andrew Pershing, VP for Science at Climate Central
Roop Singh, Senior Climate Risk Adviser at the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre
Michelle Litwin, Heat Response Program Manager for the City of Phoenix’s Office of Heat Response and Mitigation
