Climate Central is an independent group of scientists and science translators who research and report the facts about our changing climate and how it affects people’s lives. We use science and tech to generate thousands of local storylines and compelling visuals that make climate change relevant and show what can be done about it. We address climate science, sea level rise, extreme weather, energy, and related topics. We collaborate with journalists, TV meteorologists, and other respected messengers, reaching broad audiences through local voices in the US and 150 nations. Our research and visuals appear in thousands of TV spots and well over ten thousand other news stories each year, and our impact is growing.
About the role
Climate Central has launched a new initiative to deliver compelling, accurate, and timely messages about climate-related events around the world. We are looking for an interdisciplinary data analyst who can help expand this initiative by developing scientifically robust links between climate change and its impacts on natural and human systems. We are especially interested in studying and communicating impacts that have high saliency (such as wildfire, drought, or the health effects of extreme heat) or that have large economic consequences (such as impacts on energy use or food production). Our initiative is built on daily, high-resolution estimates of how strongly climate change has influenced local conditions in the atmosphere and ocean. The scientist will work with the project team to analyze and synthesize weather, climate, and other geospatial data to produce scientifically sound messages that connect the dots between impacts and climate change.
Job activities include but are not limited to:
Identifying, evaluating, and organizing geospatial datasets that can be used to characterize impacts on people and nature.
Working with our attribution science team to quantify how climate change alters the frequency or severity of impacts.
Working with our communications team to develop scientifically sound statements that characterize the link between climate change and impacts on people and nature.
Working with our technology team to translate analyses into operational products and interactives.
Essential qualifications:
Training or experience in climate science and climate impacts.
Experience analyzing and visualizing large climate and geospatial datasets in python using packages such as xarray, pandas, statsmodels, and cartopy.
Training or experience in statistical approaches for time series and multivariate data.
Ability to work within a fast-paced, user-centered design process.
Excellent collaboration skills with a track record of working effectively with colleagues and partners across difference.
Preference will be given to candidates who have:
Familiarity with software development tools such as git and comfort using the unix command line.
Experience producing scientific manuscripts and reports
Experience communicating complex scientific topics to the public.
Compensation: The expected base salary range for this position is $65,000-75,000. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training . Climate Central offers generous benefits including paid vacation, 12 weeks paid family leave, medical, dental, 401K with up to 12% matching, and partial college tuition for children of employees who qualify.
Location and employment eligibility: This position can be mostly remote, in accordance with Climate Central organizational policy. Presence at headquarters or other U.S.-based locations is required for periodic team and organizational meetings, events and retreats. Climate Central’s headquarters are in Princeton, N.J., operating under standard U.S. Eastern time business hours. Preference will be given to candidates who are able to be present in our Princeton, NJ office at least twice per month, and ideally once per week or more.
