Climate Change Behind High Tide Floods

Nov. 13 to Nov. 16

Sea level rise from greenhouse gas pollution drove flooding during high tides at 12 locations monitored with tide gauges.

Flooding at 3 locations was natural and would have occurred without climate change.

Humans are causing climate change, and climate change is causing global sea level to rise.

Subtracting human-caused sea level rise from observed flood levels reveals which floods would have happened anyway, and which we've caused.

Floods are defined as exceeding the local “nuisance” flood threshold set by the National Weather Service based on observed impacts.
