Image of the Day: Sea of Protests on Maldives

Hundreds of supporters of former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed clashed with police amid protests aimed at unseating the country's new president. Nasheed, who became the Maldives' first democratically elected president in 2008 after 30 years of authoritarian rule, said he was removed from power in an armed coup by new president Waheed Hassan Manik.

Since that change in leadership, Nasheed's supporters have held regular rallies in Male, the capital, calling for immediate elections, confident that voters would restore Nasheed to power. Nasheed gained worldwide recognition as a leading political voice on climate change and rising sea levels and is the focus of an upcoming film, “The Island President”
