Image of the Day: Hippos Are in Their Element
A few hippos poke their heads up from a pond in the Maasai Mara national reserve in Kenya, an area heavily affected by prolonged drought. According to USAID, “consecutive seasons of poor rainfall have resulted in continued food security deterioration among populations in Kenya” leading to malnutrition and increased crop prices. But its not just humans that are feeling the effects. Many ecosystems in Kenya have seen substantial reduction in population sizes of herbivores such as zebras, elephants and buffaloes, which in turn takes its toll on the carnivores of the region like lions, cheetahs and hyenas.
