Image of the Day: Not Pie in the Sky, but Vertical Farming

As populations grow and farmlands get paved over for other uses, farmers today are required to produce more food with less land. One solution to this issue, some feel, is vertical farming. Like Mother Nature Network (MNN) says, “build our croplands like skyscrapers: straight up”.

One company, Valcent, has pioneered such a farm with crops planted in rotating rows one on top of the other. According to MNN, the rotation allows for the precise amount of light to hit each of the plants and uses far less water than conventional farming methods.
