NOAA Global Temperature Update: Second Hottest July on Record Globally

Greetings Meteorologists,


NOAA released its monthly global temperature analysis for July 2017 this morning. Over land and ocean surfaces combined, it was the 2nd warmest July on record. Only July 2016 was warmer, by 0.09°F. Records go back to 1880. Some highlights:

 

• July 2017 was 1.49°F (0.83°C) above the 20th century average of 60.4°F.

• Nine of the ten warmest Julys on record have occurred since 2005.

• The global land surface temperature was the highest on record, at 2.16°F (1.20°C) above the 20th century average of 57.8°F.

• The average global ocean temperature was the 3rd warmest on record, 1.24°F (0.69°C) above the 20th century average, even with no El Niño in place in the Pacific Ocean. Only 2015 and 2016 were warmer.

 

2017 year-to-date:

 

• The global average temperature over land and ocean surfaces was 1.62°F (0.90°C) above the 20th century average of 56.9°F (13.8°C), the 2nd highest since records began in 1880. Only 2016 was warmer.

 

NASA released their global temperature analysis for July 2017 earlier this week, also ranking July as the second warmest on record globally and second warmest year-to-date. Both NASA and NOAA calculations found July temperatures to be 1.49°F (0.83°C) above the 20th century average.

To better gauge how much warming has taken place since the early industrial era, with reference to the 2ºC warming threshold agreed upon at the 2015 Paris Climate Summit, we have combined the NASA and NOAA analyses and compared them to an 1881-1910 baseline (enclosed bar chart). Using these calculations indicates that July 2017 was 1.07ºC (1.93ºF) above that early industrial baseline.
