2015 Hottest Year on Record So Far
Through the first nine months of the year, 2015 has been the hottest year on record globally. With the strong El Niño continuing in the Pacific Ocean, it is increasingly likely that 2015 will also finish as the hottest year on record.
Globally, the hot years continue to pile up. The 10 hottest years on record have all been since 1998, and the five hottest since 2005. As seen in the graphic, the first nine months of 2015 are running well ahead of the hottest five years on record. September was the 369th consecutive month in which the global temperature was above normal, and as greenhouse gas emissions continue from the burning of fossil fuels, more heat records will likely fall.
