Data Treatment: Mean annual self-calibrated Palmer Drought Severity Index with Penman-Monteith PE (sc-PDSI pm) for years 1950–1959, 2000–2009, and 2060–2069 calculated using the 22-model ensemble-mean surface air temperature, precipitation, humidity, net radiation, and wind speed used in the IPCC AR4 from the 20th century forcing and SRES A1B 21st century simulations. Brown to tan areas are extremely dry (severe drought) conditions while blue colors indicate wet areas relative to the 1950–1979 mean.

Data Treatment: We downloaded NOAA High Resolution SST data provided by the NOAA/OAR/ESRL PSD in Boulder, Colorado, from their ftp site we averaged the anomaly for hurricane seasons 06/01/1991-11/30/1991 and 06/01/2005-11/30/2005 as well as for May 2012 so far. We then mapped the average, making sure to show the Main Development Region of Atlantic hurricanes (10°N to 20°N, 60°W to 20°W).

Data Treatment: We determined which day was the last Monday in May for each year in the period of record for each station. We analyzed the high temperature for each of those days, finding the overall maximum and the 1981-2010 average. We found the proportion of years that Monday had measured precipitation. Daily data was used from NCDC GHCN-D.

Data Treatment: Conterminous US gridded temperature and precipitation data available at here. For two 30-year periods, 1921-1950 and 1981-2010. For each grid point: Count number of years the mean temperature in January was greater than 32°F then count the number of years the annual rainfall was greater than 510mm.  Plot areas on map where these conditions are true with a certain frequency (30/30 or 25/30 years)   Overlay the quarantine area from the USDA APHIS.   For more information, feel free to contact us.

Data Treatment: For each market, forecast wind speeds from the National Weather Service (NWS) were used to estimate the amount of electricity that could be generated at existing, proposed, or theoretical wind farm facilities. For markets in Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin, wind power estimates were based on the listed existing wind farms (assuming all turbines have 1.5 MW capacity). For markets in Massachusetts and Maryland (including Washington, DC), wind power estimates were based on proposed offshore wind farms (assuming all turbines have 3.6 MW capacity). For all other markets, wind power estimates are based on theoretical wind farms of the noted size, assuming all turbines are rated at 1.5 MW. The raw data files above include each market’s forecast wind speeds for April 30 – May 3 from NWS, the estimated daily electrical generation, the number of households and the number of people this would provide power for. For more information, feel free to contact us.

Calculate average summer temperature, JJA for year listed. Rank in decreasing order of warmest winter. Select top 10 warmest average winter temperatures and the corresponding average summer temperature. Since winter 2012 has no corresponding summer (yet), it is not included. Data Treatment: In each market, a geographical point was selected central to the county. Three-hourly wind speed data was downloaded for that location from the North American Regional Reanalysis over the period 1979-2006. Wind speeds were converted to kWh that would be generated at a single 1.5 MW wind turbine at that location, and then summed over 24 hours to get daily kWh values. The plots show nine-day running average values for daily kWh, but the raw data files include individual daily values as well. For more information, feel free to contact us.

Data Treatment: For all the stations in each state we averaged the First Leaf day for two groups, years between 1951 and 1980 and between 1981 and 2010. We tested for statistical significance in the difference of the group means, and all states that showed a difference were significant.

Data Treatment: For every station in a state, the station's temperature history was imported:A script was run on the history of each day's max and min temperature for that station identifying whether or not that year represented a record high or record low for that day, the total number of records (both high and low) for the station's history was calculated, the average number of records in the state over a decade was calculated, the ratio of high records to low records was calculated and plotted for each decade beginning in the 1950s.
