Image of the Day: Swiss Pilgrims Alter Anti-Glacial Prayer

Repost This

A view of the Aletsch Glacier in Switzerland, one of the largest glaciers in the Alps. As climate change has become all too real for the Swiss villages of Fiesch and Fieschertal, the Vatican approved changes, reports National Geographic, to a Catholic ritual that for 350 years involved an annual pilgrimage and prayer to the heavens for melting of the Aletsch and Fiescher glaciers looming over them. The reason for the prayer was to alleviate the deadly flooding and destruction the glaciers caused. But as National Geographic reported, their prayers worked too well, and today the villagers worry less about flooding and more about frequent forest fires, diminishing drinking water, food, and energy.

So their prayers were answered by the industrial revolution and the world’s insistence on relying on 19th century technology in the 21st century. I looks to me that the prayers are now going straight to the mega-giant fossil fuel industry or perhaps their prayers have now changed a bit. Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.
