Many know about Hurricane Sandy and the devastating coastal flooding. Some are aware about he increased frequency of coastal flooding during high tides/full moon etc.
But only a few have written about total rainfall associated with Sandy. Fortunately Sandy did not deliver typical rainfall event over 24 hour period for a storm of such magnitude.
Furthermore there is little press linking climate with soils and impacts on soil functions. First it takes nearly 1000 years to form 1 inch of soil. Many don’t realize that climate is one of the five soil forming factors.
With rising ambient temps we also see rising soil temps, accelerating breakdown of OM in soils everywhere. When will the media begin discussing how changing climate impacts soil, soil functions, ability of soils to,produce food and shelter?
With rising sea levels soils that are currently poorly drained or have seasonal high water tables maybe inundated throughout the year, thus increasing flooding.
Healthy functional soils are at the root of everything. This needs to be explained to all.

Man is just another specie on this living planet and Ma nature is not your friend…..is that to tough on some?
This planet has a lot of self destruct variables that will take out many areas on the planet, termites produce the most methane of all species, volcanic eruptions cause huge tilts to the atmosphere, the oceans are here to help make land change along with plate movement, the sun variations and the tilt of the earth all play into planet climate and conditions…as lovely and beautiful as this earth is we the human species are no more than a pissant in the face of natural occurrence…..We are a surviving species, not gods and the arrogance and lies coming from pseudo science to steal and cheat others out of their lives is a disgrace and indicates maybe we are not worth saving…...as the earth makes natural change then so shall we…..

Ontime has it exactly wrong. Ma Nature IS our friend, most of the time. She is the reason we can live, along with the dazzling array of species that are our fellow earthlings. I hope Ontime is actually reading this site- not obvious by the comments. And it is those whose fortunes depend on our continued dependence on fossil fuels who threaten “to steal and cheat others out of their lives.”

to the author-do his calculations take human misengineering into account? Like how the addition of who knows how many hundreds of thousands of acres of hardscaping (buildings, roads, parking lots) affects local flooding?

This is a map story visiting different parts of the world also threatened by climate change:
